When I cut down this Alder tree, I cut the trunk into roughly four foot
lengths. I decided to roughly square up the logs so they would be easier
to store and move around. I used one of the offcuts, and shorter logs
from higher up the tree, to build a simple log bench.
Reenactment
I had not planned to make this bench, so I did not
have my camcorder set up when I initially made it. This meant I had to
take it apart and rebuild it so I could make this video. It doesn't show
the steps of flattening each side of the smaller logs or the underside of
the seat, but I think you'll get the idea. The Alder wood turns a bright
red shortly after it is cut. But it weathers to a dark brown or grey
after a few weeks.
