My wife's parents live in a house that is over 100 years
old. Over the previous couple years we had replaced most of the plumbing
and electrical and installed a new electrical service. The back porch had
been exposed to weather for years, and a leaking washing machine only made
matters worse. We had to jack up the rear of the house and replace the two
main beams that had almost completely rotted away. Then we built a new
floor and bumped the bathroom out to the porch area so we could move the
washer and dryer indoors. We completely gutted the old bath, and moved
another wall out so the appliances would fit. After cutting out all the old
cast iron plumbing, we started building the new bath.
I built all the cabinets using cedar my father-in-law had been keeping as
firewood from his days at the mill. Considering the little strips of wood I
started with, we were quite happy with the way they all turned out.
